KLA Members to Address Water Issues

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) Water Committee will convene on November 11 at the Kansas State University Southwest Research-Extension Center in Garden City. The meeting, led by Committee Chairman Bronson Smith and Vice Chairman Jon Heiman, is open to KLA members interested in water policy and conservation issues.

Agenda topics include an update from Jason Norquest, executive director of Groundwater District No. 3, who will discuss the district’s ongoing action plan. The session will also cover conservation initiatives in the Rattlesnake Creek Basin, which aim to mitigate the impairment of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s water right at the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge.

Additionally, attendees will hear from Rep. Ken Rahjes, chairman of the Kansas House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. He will share insights on the progress of the Kansas Program Water Taskforce and its work in addressing statewide water challenges.

Water Committee members will review current and expiring KLA water policies to prepare for consideration at the upcoming 2025 KLA Convention. The discussions will help shape the future direction of water management and policy advocacy within the state’s livestock sector.

The meeting will start at 10:30 a.m. and conclude at noon. Following the session, participants will enjoy a complimentary beef tri-tip lunch. Members wishing to attend are encouraged to RSVP in advance by emailing aaron@kla.org to confirm their meal count.

This meeting provides an opportunity for KLA members to stay informed about key water-related developments and contribute to shaping the policies that impact Kansas agriculture.
