KSU TAPS Launches Smart Farming Competition

KSU TAPS Launches Smart Farming Competition

By Scout Nelson

Kansas State University (KSU) is launching its own Testing Ag Performance Solutions (TAPS) competition, joining the efforts already active at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Colorado State University, and Oklahoma State University. This interactive, real-world farming competition is designed to test both technology and decision-making skills in agriculture.

Led by Daran Rudnick, Director of Sustainable Irrigation, KSU-TAPS will be held at the Western Kansas Research-Extension Centers (WKREC) in Colby and Garden City. The competition brings together producers, researchers, students, government representatives, and industry experts, all aiming to improve crop profitability and input-use efficiency, especially irrigation.

Unlike traditional presentations or short product demos, the TAPS program allows participants to actively use the latest tools, make real-time management decisions, and learn from actual results. “TAPS brings everybody together,” said an organizer. “Instead of a 30-minute highlight, they actually get to use it, make decisions and see how it plays out.”

Participants will compete for top prizes in three categories: most profitable, most input-use efficient, and highest grain yield. This initiative is meant to support a shift toward water-smart farming practices in a limited water environment.

To highlight new technologies and methods, the 2025 TAPS Technology Field Days will be held on July 29 in Colby and July 31 in Garden City. Sponsored by Western Kansas Irrigation and TAPS partners, these events are open to everyone interested in improving farm productivity.

Whether you're a TAPS participant or just eager to explore innovative irrigation tools and crop management strategies, these field days offer a valuable learning opportunity.

Register today and be part of this growing movement towards smarter, more efficient farming in Kansas.
