Michigan State University Extension is offering farmers an opportunity to learn about effective late-season weed management through its 2026 Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series. The educational program is designed to provide growers with practical information, research-based recommendations, and timely updates to help improve crop production and prepare for future growing seasons.

One of the featured sessions will focus on developing a successful late-season weed control strategy. Effective weed management at the end of the growing season can help reduce weed pressure, limit seed production, and improve field conditions for the following year. These practices are important for maintaining crop yields and supporting long-term farm productivity.

The session will feature Christy Sprague, Professor and Weed Extension Specialist at Michigan State University, who will discuss the benefits of late-season weed control and explain how growers can use these strategies to create a stronger foundation for the 2027 crop season. Participants will gain valuable insights into managing troublesome weeds and improving overall field management.

Following the weed management presentation, Jeff Andresen, MSU Climatologist, will provide a detailed climate and weather outlook. His presentation will help growers better understand current weather patterns and conditions that could influence crop production and field operations in the coming months. Weather information remains a critical tool for agricultural decision-making, particularly as farmers plan harvest activities and prepare for the next growing season.

The MSU Extension Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series has become a valuable educational resource for producers throughout the growing season. The program is conducted weekly from March through September and is designed to address timely agricultural issues as they arise. Its flexible structure allows specialists and educators to provide information relevant to current field conditions and emerging production challenges.

Each virtual session includes presentations from agricultural experts followed by an open question-and-answer period. During the interactive discussion, participants can speak directly with university specialists and educators, gaining practical advice and clarification on topics affecting their operations.

The program is accessible through Zoom video conferencing and can be joined using a computer, tablet, smartphone, or standard telephone connection. Those using Zoom can also view visual presentations and educational materials shared by speakers during the session.

An additional benefit for agricultural professionals is the availability of Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP) credits and Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) continuing education units for individuals who attend live sessions. These credits support ongoing professional development and certification requirements.

Participation in the program is free, and growers only need to register once to receive access information. After registering, participants receive Zoom meeting details, call-in numbers, and weekly reminder emails. They may choose to continue receiving updates or opt out at any time.
