Learn to grow perfect pumpkins with Illinois Extension program

By Andi Anderson

The University of Illinois Extension invites gardeners and pumpkin enthusiasts to join the upcoming “Pumpkins Beyond the Patch” program, held at noon on November 19 at the Piatt County Extension Office, located at 210 S. Market St.

This program is part of the Extension’s Growing Community initiative and is designed for anyone interested in learning the ins and outs of growing pumpkins, from choosing the right seeds to tackling pest control.

Master Gardener volunteers from Illinois Extension will share expert advice on a variety of topics to ensure a successful pumpkin harvest.

The program will cover seed selection, planting methods, and pollination tips. Attendees will also gain insights into managing common pumpkin pests and diseases to improve plant health and yield.

“Pumpkins Beyond the Patch” is a free event, open to gardeners of all levels. While attendance is free, advance registration is encouraged by November 18 to secure a spot. Registration can be completed online at go.illinois.edu/BeyondthePatch.

This program offers valuable information not only for experienced gardeners but also for beginners hoping to grow vibrant pumpkins for holiday decor or baking. The University of Illinois Extension aims to provide equal opportunities in all programs, and those needing accommodation are encouraged to contact the Extension Office at 217-762-2191 as early as possible.

Whether you're aiming for the perfect jack-o'-lantern or planning to bake fresh pumpkin pies, this informative session will give you the skills to grow strong and healthy pumpkin plants in your own garden.
