The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications for the Farm to Food Security Grant program. This new state program was created by the Minnesota Legislature in 2025. It is designed to help local farmers and food producers while increasing access to healthy food for people facing food insecurity.
The program is modeled after the former federal Local Food Purchase Assistance Program. It supports projects that buy Minnesota-grown and Minnesota-raised food and distribute it to residents in need. Eligible foods include produce, meat, and other whole or processed foods. At least one primary ingredient must be 80 percent grown or raised in Minnesota. All food distribution must take place within the state.
“This program connects Minnesota grown food with people who need it, while helping small farmers build new markets and stable income,” said MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen. “We modeled it after a federal program that demonstrated real impact, and I appreciate the bipartisan work at the Legislature that made this program possible in Minnesota.”
A wide range of applicants may apply. Eligible groups include individuals, nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses, Tribal governments, government entities, agricultural cooperatives, economic development organizations, and educational institutions.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture may award up to $1.3 million through a competitive review process. Individual grant requests may range from $20,000 to $100,000. A dollar-for-dollar match is required for funds requested above $50,000. This is a reimbursement grant, which means recipients must first pay project costs and then submit receipts for reimbursement after signing the contract.
Full eligibility requirements and application details are available on the official webpage
Applications are due by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
This program aims to strengthen local food systems, support small farmers, and improve food access for communities across Minnesota.
