MDARD Opens Grant Opportunity to Strengthen Regional Food Systems

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has announced that applications are now open for the Underserved, Value-Added, Regional Food Systems and Supply Chain Grants.

The department will accept submissions until 5 p.m. ET on April 15, 2026. This statewide grant program is designed to assist a wide range of agricultural businesses and community organizations, particularly those that have historically been underserved.

The goal of the grant program is to strengthen Michigan’s food and agriculture sector by supporting projects that expand value‑added agricultural production and processing. Value‑added agriculture includes turning raw farm products into new goods, such as making fruit into jam or milk into cheese.

In addition to processing, the program also seeks to help communities enhance their regional food systems, build stronger supply chains, and increase access to healthy foods for residents.

Applicants may request up to $100,000 for a single proposal. Each application must include matching funds—30 percent for most applicants and a reduced 15 percent for those who qualify as underserved. Underserved entities must provide self‑certification to be eligible for the reduced match. All proposals will be evaluated through a competitive selection process that focuses on measurable benefits to Michigan’s food and agriculture industries.

To apply, all applicants must submit their materials through the MiAgGrants online system. Additional program information and application instructions are available on the grant webpage. MDARD encourages organizations, farms, processors, and community groups to review the requirements carefully before submitting.

To help interested applicants learn more, MDARD will host an informational webinar on March 11, 2026, from 10–11:30 a.m. ET. The session will take place on Microsoft Teams, and no registration is required. The webinar will cover eligibility, project goals, match requirements, and the application process.

Through this grant program, MDARD aims to support local food initiatives, promote economic opportunity, and strengthen Michigan’s agricultural future by investing in communities of all sizes.
