The Michigan Agri-Business Association (MABA) has joined the Michigan Smart Trade Alliance (MISTA), a growing coalition that supports smart and predictable international trade policies. This move highlights the importance of global markets for the success of agriculture and rural economies.
MABA represents over 280 companies and organizations across the agricultural supply chain. Its members include businesses dealing with grains, oilseeds, animal nutrition, crop inputs, logistics, and professional services. The association plays a key role in supporting agricultural operations and markets.
MABA President Chuck Lippstreu emphasized the importance of export markets for Michigan farmers. “Michigan agriculture exports nearly $3 billion worth of agricultural and food products annually, with Canada accounting for approximately 43% of that value and another 16% headed to Mexico,” said Lippstreu.
He also highlighted the value of stable trade agreements. “Let’s be clear: Export markets for Michigan products are critical for the future of our agriculture sector and our rural economy. For Michigan, market access made possible by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement remains a top priority because it accounts for nearly 60% of our state’s agricultural export value.”
Trade is especially important for border states like Michigan. Canada is the largest destination for Michigan’s agricultural exports, making up about 43% of total export value in 2024. In the same year, the state exported more than $1.25 billion worth of agricultural products to Canada. Mexico is the second-largest market, receiving approximately $452 million in agricultural exports.
The MISTA coalition includes nearly a dozen organizations from different sectors, such as retail, healthcare, and business development. These groups are working together to urge policymakers to adopt trade policies that are consistent and support economic growth.
By joining this alliance, MABA aims to ensure that farmers and agricultural businesses benefit from reliable market access and fair trade conditions. Stable trade policies can help reduce costs, improve market opportunities, and support long-term growth in agriculture.
