Michigan Grants Boost Agriculture Food Processing and Rural Growth

Michigan Grants Boost Agriculture Food Processing and Rural Growth

By Andi Anderson

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has announced new grant funding to support economic development, agricultural growth, food processing, and infrastructure improvements across the state. The funding was revealed during the Upper Peninsula State Fair and will benefit 20 projects located in different regions of Michigan.

Tim Boring, Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), highlighted the importance of these investments in strengthening the state's economy. He stated, "MDARD is making bold investments in Michigan's food, agriculture and forestry economy to help expand production, create new jobs and improve quality of life for Michiganders." He further added, "Today's grants support businesses whose growth will create economic opportunities throughout our state, increasing demand for local farm and forest products and giving families more access to nutritious, Michigan-grown foods."

A significant share of the grants will support projects in Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. These investments include expanding food production, improving processing facilities, increasing storage capacity, and enhancing transportation systems. Several businesses will receive support for equipment upgrades, automation technologies, greenhouse improvements, fertilizer production, mushroom cultivation, cider processing, and local food retail expansion.

In the Upper Peninsula, grant funding will support projects such as a new licensed goat dairy, a refrigerated fish processing facility, improved food distribution systems, bakery expansions, sawmill modernization, and brewery production improvements. These initiatives are expected to strengthen local industries while creating new employment opportunities and supporting regional economic growth.

Additional grants across Mid-Michigan, Southeast Michigan, Southwest Michigan, and West Michigan will help businesses expand agricultural processing capacity, improve packaging operations, support workforce housing development, enhance greenhouse production, modernize sawmills, and increase demand for Michigan-grown farm products.

Many of the funded projects focus on adding value to local agricultural commodities while improving supply chain efficiency. Investments in production technology, refrigeration, transportation, and processing infrastructure are expected to help businesses operate more efficiently and reach additional markets.

The grant program also supports broader community goals by increasing access to locally produced food, encouraging sustainable agricultural practices, and promoting economic development in both rural and urban areas. Several projects will expand opportunities for farmers by increasing demand for locally sourced fruits, vegetables, livestock products, and forest resources.

Since Fiscal Year 2019, MDARD has awarded more than $276 million in grants to assist businesses, farms, and communities across Michigan. These investments have played a key role in strengthening the state's food, agriculture, and forestry sectors while encouraging innovation and long-term economic development.

Overall, the newly announced grants demonstrate Michigan's continued commitment to supporting local businesses, building critical infrastructure, expanding agricultural opportunities, and creating stronger communities throughout the state.
