Michigan State Launches TAPS Farm Management Challenge

Michigan State Launches TAPS Farm Management Challenge

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University Extension has introduced the Testing Ag Performance Solutions program, known as TAPS, to Michigan producers and agricultural professionals.

This innovative competition allows participants to manage a real research field throughout the growing season while making practical, data-driven decisions.

The program is modeled after successful efforts at other universities and brings together farmers, researchers, students, industry partners, and government agencies. The goal is to test precision agriculture technologies and strengthen farm management skills in a collaborative and educational setting.

Participants will manage corn and soybean plots during the season. They will make four key decisions related to irrigation scheduling, nitrogen timing and rates, and fungicide applications. Decisions will be guided by real-time field data, weather information, and crop production scenarios.

Unlike traditional workshops, TAPS provides a hands-on learning environment without financial risk. Competitors design management strategies that are then implemented on research plots at MSU’s Kellogg Biological Station.

These plots are equipped with advanced systems, including variable rate irrigation capable of applying nutrients and crop protection products. While participants focus on making decisions, MSU staff manage field operations.

Competitors may use tools such as satellite and drone imagery, soil moisture and plant sensors, weather station data, and irrigation scheduling programs. MSU will supply and install the necessary equipment based on each team’s selected method.

At the end of the season, participants receive detailed data to evaluate outcomes and improve future strategies.

The competition includes a spring kickoff meeting, a summer field day to observe crop differences, and a post-season awards luncheon. Cash prizes will be presented for the most input-efficient strategy and the highest yield.

MSU is currently recruiting individuals and teams for its first competition. An additional webinar will explain how similar programs have encouraged innovation and participation in other states.

This initiative offers Michigan producers a unique opportunity to learn by doing, strengthen management skills and explore precision agriculture technologies in a practical setting.
