Midland Seafood Expands with Algae Based Shrimp Technology

By Andi Anderson

Midland Seafood, an Iowa-based aquaculture startup, is transforming shrimp farming with its patented Algae-Based RAS technology. Co-founded in 2018 by Jackson Kimle and Matthew Ellis, the company has spent years focused on research, development, and testing of their sustainable water treatment solution designed specifically for aquaculture.

In 2024, Midland reached a major milestone by successfully launching its innovative system and building three shrimp production facilities across Iowa. Their proprietary technology uses algae to treat wastewater in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), making shrimp farming more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Their first operational system completed its first successful shrimp harvest, which exceeded expectations in both quality and financial performance. Encouraged by the results, Midland has already sold three systems to local farmers and plans to build four more facilities in 2025.

The company’s breakthrough was recognized with the granting of a patent for its algae-based water treatment solution. The technology is designed to help reduce environmental impact while supporting high-quality shrimp production, offering farmers a way to diversify their operations with a reliable, innovative system.

Midland Seafood is now looking for forward-thinking farmers across Iowa to join as partners in expanding their shrimp farming model. These partnerships offer an opportunity for producers to be part of a growing and sustainable sector within the state’s agricultural economy.

“We’re excited about the progress we’ve made and the potential for growth,” said the Midland team. “We believe this is just the beginning of reshaping how aquaculture fits into Iowa’s future.”

With a strong foundation, successful trials, and plans for rapid expansion, Midland Seafood invites agricultural professionals to explore new possibilities in sustainable aquaculture. For more details, they welcome further conversations with interested partners.
