Miles Of Smiles Honors Route 66

Miles Of Smiles Honors Route 66

By Andi Anderson

The Illinois State Fair has announced "Miles of Smiles" as its official theme for 2026, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the historic Route 66. The fair will take place from August 13 through August 23 in Springfield, Illinois, bringing together agriculture, entertainment, tradition, and community spirit.

One of the most anticipated events of the fair is the Illinois State Fair Twilight Parade, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. on August 13. The annual parade serves as the official kickoff to the 11-day celebration and is expected to feature high school bands, community organizations, classic vehicles, and creative floats.

The Illinois State Fair is currently accepting parade entries through July 6. Individuals and organizations interested in participating can find additional information at https://statefair.illinois.gov or by contacting the Special Events Office at 217-782-0777.

Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, said, “The Twilight Parade has always been about bringing people together, and this year’s ‘Miles of Smiles’ theme captures that spirit perfectly. Just like Route 66 has connected communities and created lifelong memories, this parade invites everyone to take part in a tradition that celebrates the people, places, and pride that make Illinois special.”

The parade route will begin in Lincoln Park and travel along Sangamon Avenue before entering the fairgrounds through the Main Gate. Participants will continue down Main Street, turn onto Illinois Avenue, proceed along Grandstand Avenue, and exit through Lot 21.

Route 66 holds a special place in Illinois history because the famous highway began in the state and became one of America's most recognizable travel routes. To honor its centennial anniversary, the Illinois State Fair selected a theme that reflects the memories, adventures, and connections created along the historic roadway.

Rebecca Clark, Illinois State Fair Manager, said, “Every great road trip is filled with memorable stops, and the Illinois State Fair is one of Illinois’ favorite destinations. Whether you are enjoying a lemon shake-up along the parade route, discovering a new favorite carnival ride, or revisiting annual family traditions, we invite everyone to come experience the smiles, nostalgia and adventure at this year’s Fair.”

Adding to the celebration, visitors can explore the Illinois State Museum's "Miles of Memories: Stories of Route 66" exhibit through August 20. Guests who attend the exhibit can receive a voucher for one adult weekday admission to the Illinois State Fair.

The 2026 Illinois State Fair promises a memorable celebration of Illinois agriculture, heritage, community traditions, and the enduring legacy of Route 66, offering visitors miles of memories and miles of smiles.
