Minnesota farmers had 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending July 14, 2024, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The state experienced rain showers early in the week, followed by hot and dry conditions. Livestock remained healthy, with no issues reported.
Topsoil moisture supplies were rated as 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 52 percent adequate, and 46 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated as 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 57 percent adequate, and 41 percent surplus, indicating favorable moisture levels for crop growth.
Corn silking reached 16 percent, which is five days behind last year and two days behind the five-year average. The condition of the corn crop was rated 58 percent good to excellent.
Soybeans blooming reached 46 percent, seven days behind last year and two days behind the five-year average. Soybeans setting pods reached 7 percent, eight days behind last year and four days behind the five-year average. The soybean crop condition was rated 58 percent good to excellent.
Barley progress showed 81 percent headed and 24 percent coloring, with the condition of the barley crop rated 82 percent good to excellent.
Oats were 88 percent headed and 44 percent coloring, with the oats harvest beginning at 6 percent. The oats condition was rated 80 percent good to excellent.
Spring wheat progress showed 93 percent headed and 23 percent coloring, with the condition of the crop rated 81 percent good to excellent. Dry edible beans were 21 percent blooming and began setting pods at 1 percent, with the condition rated 68 percent good to excellent.
The first cutting of alfalfa hay reached 94 percent, with the second cutting at 38 percent. All hay conditions remained 72 percent good to excellent, while pasture conditions were rated 77 percent good to excellent.
The potato crop condition was rated 95 percent good to excellent, and the sugar beet condition was rated 78 percent good to excellent.
Overall, Minnesota's crops are progressing steadily with the support of adequate moisture levels and favorable weather conditions, ensuring a positive outlook for the agricultural season.
Farmers are working diligently to maintain the health and progress of their crops despite the varying weather conditions.
