Minnesota livestock farmers can apply for Grants

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota livestock farmers and ranchers have a new opportunity to enhance their operations with over $1 million in funding available through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) Agriculture Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Livestock Investment Grant program.

The AGRI Livestock Investment Grant program is designed to provide financial support for equipment purchases, physical improvements, and the acquisition of facilities necessary for starting, improving, or expanding livestock operations in Minnesota. Eligible applicants can apply for a grant covering up to 10% of their project’s total cost, with grants ranging from $400 to $25,000.

Eligible projects under this program include a wide range of improvements, such as constructing buildings or facilities for raising livestock, installing watering systems, erecting fencing, purchasing feed equipment, and acquiring waste management equipment.

This funding round will prioritize initiatives related to beginning farmers, those who have been farming for ten years or less, as well as projects focused on generational transitions and the production of livestock for kosher or halal markets. Additionally, projects involving robotic milking equipment will also be given special consideration.

To qualify, applicants must be the principal operator of a livestock operation in Minnesota that generates at least $1,000 in livestock product sales annually or would normally sell this amount in a typical year.

It is important to note that only expenses incurred after all parties have signed the grant contract will be eligible for reimbursement. The MDA anticipates finalizing contracts with grantees by March 1, 2025.

Applications for the AGRI Livestock Investment Grant will be accepted until 4 p.m. on Thursday, November 14. Interested applicants can submit their applications through the MDA’s online portal. Detailed information regarding grant eligibility and the application process can be found on the AGRI Livestock Investment Grant webpage at mda.state.mn.us.

Funding for this initiative comes from the MDA’s AGRI Program, which administers grants to support farmers, agribusinesses, schools, and other organizations throughout Minnesota to advance agricultural and renewable energy sectors.
