Minnesota’s urban farmers and agricultural advocates have new opportunities for funding, thanks to two grant programs from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA). These programs aim to support urban farming, youth agricultural education, and conservation-focused practices.
AGRI Urban Agriculture Grant
The MDA’s Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Urban Agriculture Grant is offering $1.87 million in funding. It supports Minnesota businesses, nonprofits, schools, local governments, and tribal communities focused on promoting urban youth agricultural education and community development. Recipients can receive up to $75,000 per project to cover costs related to personnel, supplies, equipment, transportation, or translation.
Urban Farm Conservation Mini-Grant
A new Urban Farm Conservation Mini-Grant, funded by the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, is also available with $75,000 in total funding. It provides up to $5,000 per recipient for tools, supplies, and services to enhance conservation practices on urban farms.
Eligibility and Application Details
Applicants for both grants must operate within Minnesota cities with populations over 5,000 or on federally recognized tribal land in the state. Up to 100% of project costs can be reimbursed, and no cash match is required.
A joint online informational session will take place on December 12, 2024, at noon. Registration is required to attend. Applications for both grants must be submitted by January 30, 2025.
