Minnesota's week of farm fresh fun

Minnesota's week of farm fresh fun

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota is set to celebrate National Farmers’ Market Week from August 4-10, 2024, with a special event at the Lincoln Park Farmers’ Market in Duluth. This week-long observance, declared by Governor Tim Walz, is organized in collaboration with several state departments and local agriculture organizations, aiming to promote access to fresh, locally grown food.

MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen and MDH Commissioner Dr. Brooke Cunningham emphasized the importance of farmers' markets in providing nutritious food and enhancing community health and social connections.

The event in Duluth will feature over 25 local vendors, live music, family activities, giveaways, and a community meal, highlighting the contributions of farmers’ markets to local food systems. The USDA-sponsored National Farmers’ Market Week is celebrated across Minnesota by various markets, each hosting their own unique festivities.

Community Action Duluth manages the Lincoln Park Farmers’ Market, which serves as a key community hub in Duluth, running from June to September and extending indoors from October to March.

The market supports residents, especially low-income families, the elderly, and SNAP participants, by providing access to healthy food and social engagement opportunities.

The Minnesota Farmers’ Market Association (MFMA) and the Minnesota Grown program play vital roles in supporting and promoting the state's farmers' markets and local producers, ensuring the availability of Minnesota-grown products to consumers.

This celebration reflects Minnesota’s commitment to strengthening its local food systems and supporting local producers. Find local near you at minnesotagrown.com.
