Mobile Agriculture Classroom Brings Plant Science Learning to Iowa Students

Mobile Agriculture Classroom Brings Plant Science Learning to Iowa Students

By Andi Anderson

A 36‑foot mobile agriculture classroom is bringing an exciting learning experience to elementary students in several Iowa counties.

From March 16 to March 20, students in Crawford and Carroll counties will explore how plants grow, why agriculture is important, and how food reaches their homes.

This classroom is part of the Seed Survivor Mobile Classroom program, organized by the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation. The program offers free, curriculum-based lessons that introduce third and fourth graders to plant science through fun and interactive activities.

Inside the mobile classroom, students move through different educational stations. These include hands‑on displays showing the conditions plants need to grow well, multimedia learning games that make science fun, and virtual reality activities that allow students to experience agriculture in new ways.

Students also participate in seed planting, which helps them understand how tiny seeds grow into the plants that produce food.

In 2026, Iowa is one of only three states selected to host the Nutrien Seed Survivor Mobile Classroom. Across North America, nearly 100,000 students take part in this program each year. This is the second year that Iowa schools are benefiting from the partnership between the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation and Nutrien.

Over a nine‑week period from February 16 to April 17, the mobile classroom has been visiting forty‑five schools across thirteen counties, including Wapello, Mahaska, Marion, Jasper, Polk, Dallas, Crawford, Carroll, Sac, Ida, Buena Vista, Clay, and O’Brien.

Kelly Foss, Executive Director of the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation, shared that agriculture gives students real‑world examples of science topics they learn in school.

She explained that when students step inside the Seed Survivor classroom, they see how agriculture affects their daily lives and begin to develop curiosity about plant science and future careers connected to agriculture.

During the week of March 16, the classroom will visit schools in Dunlap, Schleswig, Denison, and Carroll. Reporters are welcome to observe students exploring the classroom, using virtual reality headsets, and planting seeds.

Media representatives may also schedule interviews with program educators or students to learn more about this educational effort.

The mobile classroom continues to support agricultural literacy by inspiring young learners and helping them understand the vital role agriculture plays in their daily lives. Through hands‑on activities and engaging science lessons, students gain knowledge that connects their learning to the world around them.
