Michigan State University (MSU) Extension has opened scholarship applications for its upcoming winter Foundations of Gardening course, providing gardening enthusiasts an opportunity to learn the science behind successful and sustainable gardening practices.
Scheduled from February 11 to April 15, 2027, the 10-week online program is designed for individuals interested in improving their gardening knowledge and skills.
The flexible online format allows participants to study from home through readings, videos, interactive activities, and live virtual sessions led by horticulture experts. Weekly live classes will be held on Thursday evenings, offering direct access to professional guidance and practical gardening knowledge.
The course is suitable for both beginners and experienced gardeners. It focuses on helping participants understand the science that supports healthy and productive gardens.
Major topics covered include plant science, soil health, plant propagation, insect management, plant diseases, lawn care, environmental gardening, flowers, trees, shrubs, fruits, and vegetables.
In addition to supporting personal gardening goals, the program serves as the first step for individuals interested in becoming an MSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteer. Participants who successfully complete all course requirements and achieve the required assessment scores become eligible to apply for the volunteer program and earn a certificate of completion.
To make the course more accessible, MSU Extension is offering a limited number of scholarships. These scholarships reduce the course fee by $150, lowering the financial burden for selected applicants. Scholarship applications are available between October 14 and November 11, 2026, and recipients will be notified before course registration officially opens in December.
Past participants have praised the course for its detailed content, expert instructors, and practical value. Their experiences highlight the program's effectiveness in building gardening knowledge and confidence.
“Thorough course with great content. There is a lot of material but it is presented in a way to allow for continued learning through ongoing reference to the material.”
“It is obvious to me that the instructors are very committed to providing a high-quality learning experience.”
“I absolutely loved the enthusiasm you all showed for your chosen profession in the weekly live sessions and the way you made me love it too, more than I already do!”
“I truly enjoyed the class and it has made me realize that this is a life-long adventure in gardening that will take more study and experience to really master the concepts presented in each session. The weekly live sessions were done very well and each presenter was truly excited about their expertise and willing to share. I would highly recommend this class to anyone that enjoys working with plants and landscaping.”
“I enjoyed the course a great deal. I now have the knowledge base and information resources necessary to improve my gardening skills. Thank you! Well done!”
The Foundations of Gardening course is valuable not only for future Master Gardener volunteers but also for homeowners, hobby farmers, landscapers, and professionals seeking reliable, science-based gardening information. Participants gain long-term access to useful resources that help them make informed decisions about plant care, environmental stewardship, and sustainable growing practices.
By blending expert instruction with practical learning, the course provides a strong foundation for anyone looking to create healthier, more productive gardens while developing a deeper understanding of horticulture and environmental responsibility.
