NDSU Field Day Highlights New Crop Research

North Dakota State University’s Hettinger Research Extension Center is organizing its annual field day on July 8, 2026, at 5 p.m. MDT in Hettinger, North Dakota. The event provides farmers, agronomists, and agricultural professionals with an opportunity to explore current crop research and learn about new farming practices.

Field day begins at the center’s Agronomy and Range Research Laboratory. Participants can visit research plots, observe crop trials, and interact with NDSU Extension specialists and research scientists. The program focuses on improving crop production through research-based information and practical solutions.

John Rickertsen, research agronomist at the Hettinger Research Extension Center, said the event features experts discussing small-grains varieties, corn and soybean research, weed control, and wheat disease management. “We have a nice lineup of speakers this year, who will focus on small grains varieties, corn and soybean research, and updates on weed control and wheat disease management,” said John Rickertsen, research agronomist at the Hettinger Research Extension Center. “We’ll also celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the release of Ceres spring wheat, NDSU’s first wheat variety.”

The educational sessions include weed management updates from Joe Ikley and Caleb Dalley, wheat disease and scab research from Andrew Friskop, and spring wheat variety information from Andrew Green. Additional topics include durum wheat, barley varieties, corn biological trials, nitrogen studies, soybean research, canola research, and farm management education.

Speakers from different NDSU programs will share information designed to help producers make better decisions for future growing seasons. The event also recognizes the history of agricultural research by celebrating 100 years since the release of Ceres spring wheat, NDSU’s first wheat variety.

A supper, sponsored by Farm Credit Services of Mandan, CHS Southwest Grain, Helena Agri-Enterprises and LemmonMade Butcher Shop, follows the educational sessions. All activities are free for participants.
