Nebraska extension offers crop scout training in May

Nebraska Extension is hosting an introductory level crop scout training designed specifically for industry representatives and corn and soybean growers. This event is ideal for those new to field scouting, including crop consultants, industry agronomists, and farm service center employees in Nebraska and neighboring states. It's also beneficial for growers who scout their own fields or students working in agribusiness.

The training is scheduled for May 21, from 8:55 a.m. to 5:10 p.m., at the University of Nebraska's Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center located at 1071 County Road G, Ithaca, NE 68033.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. "We look forward to providing participants a hands-on, in-person experience focusing on important crop scouting skills," says Nebraska Extension Educator Aaron Nygren.

Throughout the day, attendees will engage in various sessions including:

• Scouting tips and understanding corn and soybean growth and development.
• Techniques for scouting soil, tissue, diseases, and using drones.
• Identifying weeds and weed seedlings.
• Corn and soybean insect identification and management.
• Recognizing nutrient deficiencies in corn and soybeans.

Participants have praised past sessions for their practical knowledge and improved accuracy in field scouting. The training enhances scouting skills and offers a hands-on approach highly rated by attendees.

The cost of the program is $100, which includes lunch, refreshment breaks, workshop materials, and a detailed instruction manual in a 3-ring binder.

For those who opt out of receiving the instruction manual, the fee is $60. Preregistration is encouraged to ensure availability of workshop materials and to aid in meal planning.

Attendees can earn Certified Crop Advisor continuing education credits, including 6 credits in pest management, 1 in crop management, and 0.5 in fertility/nutrient management.
