Nebraska producers could see better harvest opportunities in the coming weeks as weather patterns begin to change. While frequent rainfall and high humidity have slowed crop drydown and fieldwork across much of the state, drier conditions in early October may provide a more favorable window for harvest activities.
During a September 25,2026, weather webinar, Nebraska State Climatologist Deb Bathke and Nebraska Extension Meteorologist Eric Hunt reviewed recent weather trends and discussed the outlook for the fall and winter seasons. They highlighted how summer weather conditions affected crop development, soil moisture levels and drought recovery across Nebraska.
Although many areas received rainfall during the growing season, drought recovery has varied significantly across the state. Some regions have seen noticeable improvements in soil moisture, while others continue to face dryness that affects crop production, pasture conditions and water resources.
The experts also discussed the potential effects of a strengthening El Niño pattern. Current outlooks suggest it could bring warmer-than-normal temperatures during the fall and winter months, along with increased chances of precipitation in some parts of Nebraska.
Bathke and Hunt emphasized that drought conditions cannot be measured by rainfall alone. Temperature, wind and atmospheric demand for moisture all influence how much stress crops, soils and rangelands experience, even in areas that have received adequate precipitation.
The webinar helped producers better understand how weather and climate factors may affect agricultural operations in the months ahead.
