Nebraska Officials Discuss Biofuels Growth, Energy Costs, and Opportunities

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska agricultural producers recently joined federal and state leaders for a discussion focused on biofuels, E15 fuel, and energy costs. The meeting provided an opportunity for farmers to share their experiences and discuss issues that affect both agriculture and consumers.

The roundtable was hosted by the Nebraska Farm Bureau and brought together U.S. Senator Deb Fischer, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, Senator Pete Ricketts, Representative Don Bacon, and Representative Adrian Smith. During the discussion, participants focused on the role of biofuels in strengthening the nation's energy supply while supporting agricultural production.

One of the key topics was E15, a fuel blend containing 15% ethanol. Supporters believe expanded access to E15 can help lower fuel costs for consumers while creating stronger markets for agricultural products used in biofuel production. The discussion also examined the importance of maintaining a diverse energy system that includes traditional and renewable energy sources.

“E15 is one of the most direct ways we can provide relief at the pump,” Fischer said. “Secretary Wright understands a diverse energy mix of oil, gas, renewables, nuclear, and biofuels makes the United States stronger and more resilient during market disruptions. I’m glad he had a chance to hear firsthand from Nebraska’s producers about the challenges they face.”

Secretary Wright also emphasized the administration's focus on affordable energy and support for the biofuels sector.

“We held a productive meeting with Nebraska’s farmers where we discussed the Trump administration’s commitment to doing everything we can to lower the cost of energy, including supporting Nebraska’s growing biofuels industry,” Wright said. “It’s no coincidence that in a state with such hardworking Americans and leaders, growth and prosperity are surging.”

Biofuels remain an important part of Nebraska's agricultural economy. Increased demand for ethanol-based fuels can create new opportunities for producers while contributing to the nation's energy goals. Industry supporters believe that wider availability of E15 can benefit farmers, fuel retailers, and consumers.

Another major point discussed was legislation related to year-round E15 sales. Fischer secured a provision in the Farm Bill that allows the year-round sale of E15. The Farm Bill advanced out of the Senate Agriculture Committee on September 16, 2026, marking an important step in the legislative process.

The President has also urged Congress to approve the permanent, year-round sale of E15. Supporters argue that this measure would provide long-term certainty for the biofuels industry while expanding fuel choices for consumers. As discussions continue, Nebraska leaders remain focused on promoting energy affordability, strengthening agriculture, and supporting the continued growth of the state's biofuels sector.
