For the week ending on April 14, 2024, Nebraska farmers enjoyed 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork, as noted by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This week saw a mix of topsoil moisture levels, with 12% rated very short, 38% short, 47% adequate, and 3% surplus.
Subsoil moisture was similarly distributed with 12% very short, 40% short, 46% adequate, and 2% surplus.
In the crops field, corn planting was slightly ahead with 2% completed, which is near the 1% recorded both last year and the five-year average. Winter wheat showed promising conditions: 1% very poor, 3% poor, 26% fair, 56% good, and 14% excellent.
Oats have made significant progress, with 59% planted, outpacing last year's 43% and the 40% average. 20% of oats have emerged, a substantial increase from the 8% seen in previous years.
This week's report underscores a productive start to the planting season in Nebraska, highlighted by better-than-average planting rates and stable moisture supplies.
