New Guide Helps Test Feed Mixer Uniformity

New Guide Helps Test Feed Mixer Uniformity

By Andi Anderson

A new publication from the Iowa Pork Industry Center at Iowa State University is helping livestock producers ensure consistent animal nutrition through proper feed mixing practices.

The guide, titled “Mixer Uniformity Test Procedure” (IPIC 210), outlines how to evaluate feed uniformity using trace ingredients and proper sampling techniques.

Uniform feed ensures animals receive the correct nutrients in every portion, which directly supports their growth and overall health. The publication was authored by Iowa State University Extension swine specialist Mark Storlie.

“The mixer design will direct your sampling procedure,” said Storlie. “Samples should be taken at, or as close to, the mixer discharge as possible.”

The guide provides methods for both horizontal and vertical mixers. In horizontal mixers, a grain probe is used to collect ten samples from designated areas inside the mixer. For vertical or continuous mixers, samples should be taken as the feed exits the mixer, with precise timing.

Tracers such as salt, synthetic amino acids, and trace minerals are used in small quantities to assess how evenly the ingredients are mixed. These samples can be sent to a lab for testing or sometimes checked on-site, depending on the farm’s resources.

Storlie advises conducting a mixer uniformity test within 90 days of installing new or replacement equipment. Routine tests should follow at least once every one to three years.

The guide also includes steps for analyzing the results and offers a downloadable Excel spreadsheet—the Feed Uniformity Test Tracker—for calculating and recording uniformity scores. This helps producers maintain a reliable process, leading to better animal performance and productivity.

The two-page guide is available for free at the ISU Extension Store and is a valuable tool for producers aiming to improve feeding accuracy and herd health through proper mixer maintenance and testing routines.
