The issue of nitrogen management continues to be of concern to all the areas of agriculture industry because of the increasing cost of fertilizers, reduced crop prices, and environmental worries. To add depth to decision-making regarding fertilizers, the University of Minnesota Extension has introduced Nitrogen College, a series of free workshops scheduled this February.
Nitrogen College events build on the long-running Nitrogen Smart program, offering in-depth learning experiences focused on improving nitrogen efficiency while maintaining natural resources.
These workshops are focused on helping irrigators better understand how nitrogen is working in their operations, as well as how management skills can be changed for better outcomes.
This event will consist of five sessions that will take place on two different days. Interested people will have the option to attend any session based on their interests. These will include a comprehensive exploration of the 4 Rs of nutrient stewardship and the collective efforts around the aspect of choosing the right fertilizer for crop improvement.
Additional sessions examine how climate conditions such as temperature and moisture affect nitrogen performance, strategies to reduce nitrate movement into water, and the role of emerging biological nitrogen products. A new session also explores how variable rate technology can improve nitrogen applications by adjusting rates across fields.
Certified Crop Advisors may earn continuing education credits by attending these sessions. Lunch will not be provided so attendees should plan accordingly. Detailed schedules and session times are available online at
