North Dakota 4-H Launches 2026 STEM Challenge

North Dakota 4-H Launches 2026 STEM Challenge

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota 4-H, a program of NDSU Extension, announces the 2026 North Dakota 4-H STEM Challenge to encourage youth across the state to explore science and engineering through a creative hands-on activity.

The 2026 challenge is called the Edible Engineering Experiment. It asks participants to design and build a bridge using only four full size chocolate bars. No glue tape wrappers or other materials are allowed. The goal is to create a bridge that holds the greatest amount of weight while following all design rules.

This STEM Challenge is not a competition. Instead, it is designed as a fun and flexible learning activity that youth and adults can complete at their own pace throughout the year. The activity helps participants practice problem solving planning and basic engineering skills in an enjoyable way.

The challenge focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by encouraging youth to think about structure, balance, and strength. By using chocolate bars, participants learn how different designs affect how much weight a bridge can support. The activity guide is available online at ndsu.ag/STEMchallenge-26.

“When the National 4-H STEM Challenge was discontinued, the North Dakota 4-H STEM team committed to providing engaging, hands-on STEM learning experiences designed to spark interest in science or engineering learning,” says Margo Bowerman, North Dakota State University Extension 4-H STEM specialist.

The 2026 North Dakota 4-H STEM Challenge is open to all North Dakota youth. Participants can take part in local 4-H clubs after school programs, classrooms, home schools, and community groups. Adults are also encouraged to support youth as they explore ideas and test designs.

This activity helps youth build confidence and interest in STEM topics. It also supports teamwork, communication, and creative thinking. The challenge is designed to be simple and affordable so more youth can take part.

North Dakota 4-H continues to provide educational programs that prepare young people for future careers and lifelong learning. For more information about youth education activities, families can contact local NDSU Extension office.
