The North Dakota Agricultural Products Utilization Commission (APUC) has granted funding to five innovative projects, with awards totaling $475,040. These grants, approved at the APUC's recent quarterly meeting on November 21 in Bismarck, aim to develop new and expanded uses for North Dakota agricultural products, thereby bolstering rural communities and agricultural operations.
APUC, a program under the North Dakota Department of Agriculture, offers grants across several categories including basic and applied research, marketing and utilization, farm diversification, nature-based agritourism, prototype development, technology, and technical assistance. This wide-ranging support reflects the state’s commitment to enhancing its agricultural sector and supporting the local economy.
Among the recipients, Dakota Don’s Artisan Waffles, LLC received $12,000 to develop high-protein and gluten-free waffle mixes, supporting health-conscious consumers and dietary needs. BI Biorefinery, LLC was awarded $205,000 to aid in the restoration of an ethanol processing facility, a step towards sustainable energy solutions from agricultural byproducts.
Additionally, Smoke Wagon Meats, LLC secured $150,000 to establish a new meat processing facility near Walhalla, which will enhance local meat production capabilities. The North Dakota Department of Agriculture itself received $81,000 to assist state companies in promoting their products at domestic trade shows, increasing visibility and market reach.
Lastly, Lake Agassiz Regional Council was granted $27,040 to develop an odor footprint tool, an innovative approach to managing agricultural odors and improving community relations in farming areas.
These projects collectively showcase North Dakota's proactive approach to agricultural development and community support, with the next round of grant applications scheduled for review in February 2025.
