North Dakota Leaders Highlight Benefits of Year-Round E15

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota agriculture and energy leaders are highlighting the potential benefits of allowing E15 gasoline to be sold nationwide throughout the year.

Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak joined North Dakota State University economist David Ripplinger, farmers, ethanol producers, fuel retailers, livestock representatives, and other industry leaders to discuss the issue in Fargo.

A joint biofuels and corn industry study estimates that year-round E15 could add $25.8 billion to the U.S. economy and create 128,000 jobs.

“North Dakota farmers are the best in the world, but they need strong, reliable markets for what they produce,” Fedorchak said. “Year-round E15 would create additional demand for North Dakota corn, support good-paying jobs, strengthen American energy security, and give families a lower-cost choice at the pump. The House has acted with strong bipartisan support. Now the Senate needs to get this legislation across the finish line and onto President Trump’s desk.”

North Dakota’s corn industry generates about $7.3 billion in annual business activity and supports nearly 19,000 jobs.

Ethanol has also helped increase corn production in the state. Farmers plant an estimated 4.4 million acres of corn in 2026, compared with about 500,000 acres in 2005.

The state’s five ethanol plants use about 210 million bushels of corn each year. Greater E15 use could increase demand for both ethanol and corn, potentially supporting farm income and rural businesses.

E15 may also provide savings for drivers. On Aug. 15, E15 sells about 15 cents less per gallon than regular gasoline in Fargo.

New ethanol investments could further increase demand. Gevo plans a second ethanol facility in Richardton that could create a market for another 27 million bushels of North Dakota corn each year.
