Pope County Offers Free Nitrate Testing for Private Wells

Pope County Offers Free Nitrate Testing for Private Wells

By Scout Nelson

Residents of Pope County and surrounding areas can receive free nitrate testing for private well water at an upcoming clinic hosted by the Pope Soil and Water Conservation District, Chippewa River Watershed Association, and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA).

The event will also offer reduced-cost testing for additional contaminants, including arsenic ($25) and manganese ($20). Support for the clinic will be provided by the Minnesota Well Owners Organization and the Minnesota Groundwater Association.

Nitrate contamination is a common concern in rural Minnesota and can pose health risks, especially for infants and pregnant women. Private wells in agricultural areas, as well as older or shallow wells, are often more vulnerable to contamination. Health officials recommend annual testing because private well owners are responsible for monitoring their own water quality.

Participants should collect a water sample by running cold water for five to 10 minutes, filling a clean container, keeping it cool, and bringing it to the clinic. Attendees will receive immediate nitrate results and personalized guidance at no charge.

Funded through Minnesota’s Clean Water Fund, the clinic supports ongoing efforts to protect groundwater quality and promote safe drinking water.
