Promoting U.S. Beef genetics internationally

Promoting U.S. Beef genetics internationally

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) joined the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and the International Brangus Breeders Association for a beef genetics trade mission to northwestern Mexico from November 4-7, 2024.

The delegation visited several ranches in Sonora, including Santa Cecilia Angus, El Cosari Ranch, and Sierra Angus Ranch. These visits aimed to evaluate beef genetics suitable for the challenging local environment. The team also conducted a seminar at the Sonora Cattle Union in Hermosillo, sharing data on U.S. feedyards and emphasizing the profitability of high-quality genetics.

The mission showcased the adaptability of the Brangus breed. “Witnessing firsthand the ability for Brangus to thrive in the harsh environment of Hermosillo was an eye-opening experience,” said an International Brangus Breeders Association representative.

KDA's mission includes supporting all areas of agriculture, including facilitating trade opportunities. This trip highlights their commitment to connecting producers with domestic and international markets. The mission was supported through KDA’s membership in U.S. Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. (USLGE) and USDA Market Access Program funding.
