Quarantine Expands After Pest Detection – Restricting Movement of Firewood

Quarantine Expands After Pest Detection – Restricting Movement of Firewood

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has confirmed the presence of emerald ash borer (EAB) in a new part of Kandiyohi County. This discovery has led officials to expand the existing quarantine to cover the entire county. The insect was found in the City of Willmar, which was previously outside the quarantine boundary.

To control the spread of this harmful pest, the MDA has imposed an emergency quarantine across the county. The quarantine restricts the movement of firewood and ash tree materials outside the area. These measures are necessary to prevent the insect from spreading to new regions, where it could damage healthy trees.

Emerald ash borer is a highly destructive insect that attacks ash trees. Its larvae live under the bark and feed on tissues that carry nutrients within the tree. This feeding activity blocks the flow of nutrients, eventually killing the tree. The pest was first discovered in Minnesota in 2009 and has since affected many locations.

There are some common signs that indicate EAB infestation. Increased activity of woodpeckers is one such sign, as they feed the larvae. Another symptom includes cracks in the tree bark, revealing S-shaped patterns underneath caused by the insect’s feeding. Early identification helps reduce damage.

A virtual informational meeting will be held to educate residents and tree care professionals. Experts will provide important information and answer questions from participants. The meeting is scheduled for:

  • Thursday, June 11, 2026
  • 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Residents can register on MDA website.

The public can also share feedback on the proposal to make the emergency quarantine permanent. Comments will be accepted until July 10, and officials may adopt a formal quarantine on July 15. More details are available on the site.

Public comments can be submitted during the meeting or by email. Additional information about emerald ash borer is available here.

By following quarantine rules and staying informed, residents can play an important role in protecting ash trees and limiting the spread of this dangerous pest.
