Quarterly Report Shows Fewer Heifers on Feed

Quarterly Report Shows Fewer Heifers on Feed

By Andi Anderson

A recent quarterly cattle report provides a clearer picture of current livestock supply conditions in the United States. The data shows that total cattle on feed inventories remain slightly lower than the previous year.

Overall numbers closely matched market expectations and point to continued tight cattle supplies, reduced slaughter levels, and longer feeding periods.

One of the most important findings in the report is a decline in the number of heifers on feed. Heifers placed in feedlots were modestly lower compared with the same period last year, while the number of steers remained largely unchanged.

As a result, heifers now represent a smaller share of total cattle on feed than in recent years. This percentage is often watched closely because it can offer clues about herd expansion or contraction.

The current share of heifers on feed is slightly above the long-term average but is the lowest level seen in several years for a quarterly report. This downward movement suggests cautious herd management rather than rapid expansion.

While heifer retention is often linked to future herd growth, the numbers show that producers remain careful with breeding decisions.

Another key trend is the continued reduction in beef cow slaughter. After several years of heavy culling earlier in the decade, slaughter levels dropped sharply in more recent years. So far in 2026, beef cow slaughter remains well below last year’s pace.

If this trend continues, the annual culling rate could fall below long-term averages, which may help stabilize cattle inventories over time.

Weather conditions are expected to play an important role going forward. Drought or favorable moisture patterns can strongly influence decisions related to heifer retention and cow culling.

While heifer numbers offer useful signals, the current level of cow slaughter may have an even greater impact on overall cattle supplies in the coming year.

Taken together, the report highlights a cattle industry still operating with limited supplies and careful management. These factors are likely to influence beef production levels and market conditions as the industry moves toward 2027.
