Ridgewater College meat program earns praise

By Scout Nelson

Ridgewater College in Minnesota recently received praise from the state legislature for its meat cutting program, which has earned recognition for its unique approach. The program, requiring 18 credits to complete, covers essential courses such as basic meat cutting and advanced meat processing. Led by Sophia Berg, the program has garnered attention for its impact, with Berg recently honored with the 2024 Minnesota Outstanding Postsecondary Agriculture Program award from the Minnesota Association of Agriculture Educators.

“Receiving this has been rewarding,” said Berg of the recent legislative resolution. “It proves that our work is making an impact and that there is support from both industry and the state. The uniqueness of the delivery is what makes this program stand out amongst other programs.”

Key figures who supported the resolution include Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, Chair of Rules and Legislative Administration Jamie Long, and Representative Dawn Gillman. This recognition highlights the importance of vocational education and the collaboration between educational institutions and local businesses in providing students with valuable, real-world skills.
