SDSU Hosts Corn Disease Scouting Event

SDSU Hosts Corn Disease Scouting Event

By Scout Nelson

Farmers and crop advisors curious about unusual symptoms in their corn fields this season can get expert guidance at a free corn disease scouting session hosted by South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension.

The event takes place Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. CDT at the SDSU Northeast Research Farm, 15710 455th Avenue, South Shore, South Dakota.

This come-and-go session gives participants a chance to walk through research plots and learn how to identify major corn diseases.

Specialists will demonstrate scouting techniques and highlight common problems found in the region, including tar spot, southern rust, and northern corn leaf blight.

The SDSU Extension Plant Pathology team, including Field Specialist Connie Strunk and Assistant Professor Madalyn Shires, will be on site for the entire two-hour window. Attendees may join at any time and stay as long as their schedule allows.

Growers who suspect tar spot in their own fields are encouraged to bring samples for analysis. Samples should be sealed in a plastic bag with a dry paper towel to keep them safe for inspection.

This educational opportunity is designed to help farmers improve disease detection and management skills before harvest. By learning how to spot early signs of infection, producers can make better decisions about treatment and protect yields for the next growing season.

For more details or specific questions about the session, contact Connie Strunk or Madalyn Shires with SDSU Extension Plant Pathology.
