SDSU Livestock Event Celebrates 103 Years Legacy

SDSU Livestock Event Celebrates 103 Years Legacy

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University will host the 103rd Little International, a well-known student-run agricultural event, on March 27–28 at the Animal Science Arena in Brookings. This two-day event brings together high school and college students to showcase their skills in livestock exhibition and agricultural contests.

Recognized as the largest student-run livestock exposition in the nation, Little International gives students hands-on experience in animal care, judging, and presentation. The event reflects the importance of agriculture education while building teamwork and leadership skills among participants.

This year’s theme, “Honoring Tradition, Showcasing Excellence,” highlights the long history of the event and the dedication of young people entering the agriculture industry. Cassidy Strommen, a senior studying agricultural communications, leads the event as manager.

“We are thrilled to carry on this long-standing tradition at SDSU,” Strommen said. “Our mission is to educate students about agricultural practices, and I’m excited to see the camaraderie and dedication shine at this year’s event.”

Activities begin earlier in the week with team-fitting contests, where students prepare animals such as goats or beef heifers for judging. These contests focus on teamwork and presentation skills.

On Friday, about 2,000 FFA and 4-H students will participate in 13 career development events. These contests test knowledge in areas like agronomy and veterinary science, helping students prepare for real-world agricultural careers.

The event continues on Saturday with showmanship competitions and special activities. A reception honors Glenn Muller as the 2026 Honored Agriculturalist, while an open house celebrates the 100th anniversary of the university’s horse barn.

The event concludes with final competitions and awards, followed by a concert. Overall, Little International continues to promote learning, tradition, and excellence in agriculture.

Livestreaming will be available via Walton Webcasting on the SDSU Little International Facebook page. More information and a full schedule can be found on the Little International website.
