South Dakota State University Extension is expanding its livestock education efforts with the addition of Paige Madison as a Livestock Production and Stewardship Field Specialist. Based in Mitchell, Madison will work with beef producers across South Dakota to support stronger production practices and responsible livestock management.
Madison will assess the needs of the state’s beef industry and develop educational programs and materials that address those needs. She will also serve as South Dakota’s Beef Quality Assurance Coordinator and provide certification training for beef producers. One of her goals is to increase the number of certified producers across the state.
“I am excited to meet new people who are involved in the beef industry throughout the state of South Dakota,” Madison said. “I look forward to being a resource for producers and hope to help them improve their operations.”
Madison brings a strong background in agriculture and livestock. She grew up in Minnesota and participated in the 4-H and FFA. Her experience also includes volunteer work as a livestock and showmanship judge.
She earned a bachelor's degree in animal science and agricultural science from SDSU, along with minors in ranch management, agricultural business, and equine studies. She later earned a master's degree in animal science with a focus on ruminant nutrition from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Before joining SDSU Extension, Madison gained experience through several livestock and agricultural positions. Her work included time at a horse therapy barn, SDSU animal research facilities, an equestrian barn, a private feedlot and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln research feedlot.
Sandy Smart, SDSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Program Leader, said Madison’s education and work experience prepare her well for the position.
"Paige has deep roots in agriculture based on her farm upbringing in southwestern Minnesota and comes well prepared with her degrees,” Smart said. “She is down to earth and enjoys speaking with producers. She will be an excellent fit in her new role as an SDSU Extension Livestock Production and Stewardship Field Specialist position."
