A practical workshop is being organized to help small farms build affordable produce coolers. Coolers play an important role in maintaining the quality and safety of fresh fruits and vegetables. However, many small farms find commercial coolers expensive and difficult to manage. This workshop aims to provide a simple and cost-effective solution.
Participants will learn how to assemble disassembled and used cooler panels step by step. The session also includes guidance on installing an air conditioning unit and using a Cool-Bot system. This system helps convert a regular AC unit into an efficient cooling system suitable for farm use. By the end of the training, participants will understand how to build and maintain their own produce cooler.
The workshop is designed mainly for fruit and vegetable growers who want to improve their storage systems. Attendees will receive a complete list of materials and suppliers, making it easier for them to replicate the process on their farms. This practical approach ensures that participants gain hands-on experience rather than just theoretical knowledge.
The event will take place on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Central Time at the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering building in St. Paul, Minnesota. The participation fee is $15, and a light lunch will be provided. Participants are advised to wear work clothes suitable for hands-on activities. Registration is required and can be completed online.
The program also ensures equal participation opportunities. Accommodation requests can be made in advance, and interpreter services may be available upon request. Overall, this workshop offers a valuable learning opportunity for small farms to adopt affordable and effective cooling solutions.
