Smart Farming Field Learning Event

Smart Farming Field Learning Event

By Scout Nelson

The Irrigation and Nutrient Management Field Day is an educational event designed to help participants understand how to manage water and nutrients effectively, especially on sandy soils. Maintaining the right balance between irrigation and fertilizers is important for improving crop yield while protecting the environment.

This field day provides a hands-on opportunity to observe real-world research trials. These trials are conducted to address modern challenges in crop production. Participants will gain practical knowledge that can be applied to improve farming practices.

One of the key topics of the event is precision nitrogen strategies. Attendees will learn how controlled-release fertilizers and advanced tools help reduce nutrient loss through leaching. This ensures that crops receive the nutrients they need without harming soil and water quality.

Another major focus is water optimization. Visitors will understand how different irrigation techniques, such as deficit irrigation, can influence crop growth. The event will also showcase how combinations of tillage and cover crops affect corn, soybeans, and potato production.

Field day will also cover pest and disease resilience. Participants will learn about managing plant diseases like Verticillium wilt. Experts will share strategies to control pests using behavioral ecology, helping reduce the need for harmful chemicals.

The event is open to all interested individuals. It is free of cost, making it accessible to everyone who wishes to learn. Registration can be completed online through the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdFOUMoJq9p4hgzMlT73OA_NNFlKExgjH0sFyA6V4M6tj1ykA/viewform.There is no registration deadline.

The organizers ensure equal participation for all attendees. Those needing special accommodations should contact the organizers at least two weeks before the event. The program will be delivered in English, with interpreter services available upon request.

The event will take place on Thursday, July 9, 2026, from 3 to 6 p.m. CDT at the Sand Plains Research Farm, located at 15003 157th St. SE, Becker, MN 55308. For further information, participants can contact Timothy Gieseke at tgieseke@umn.edu.

This field day offers valuable insights and practical learning for improving crop management and sustainability.
