Smart Grazing Decisions Key Amid Spring Dry Conditions

Smart Grazing Decisions Key Amid Spring Dry Conditions

By Andi Anderson

As spring begins, many farmers are preparing to send their herds out to pasture. However, dry soil conditions across southern and eastern regions of the state demand a more cautious approach this year.

Despite winter precipitation, much of the moisture was lost due to frozen ground runoff. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, nearly 30% of Ohio remains abnormally dry as of late March. This raises concerns about pasture health and forage availability in the months ahead.

Turning out cattle too early can lead to overgrazing, especially where pastures were stressed or overused last fall. Overgrazing weakens plants by preventing root energy storage, which limits spring regrowth and summer productivity.

Delaying grazing to allow more vegetative growth and practicing rotational grazing will help maintain healthy forage throughout 2025.

The shortage of stored forage adds to the challenge. Ohio produced 30% less grass hay in 2024 compared to previous years, and carryover supplies are also low. Many producers are questioning how long hay supplies will last and what alternative feeds may work best.

To build resilience, producers are encouraged to consider planting spring annuals or sorghum-sudangrass for baleage as additional feed sources. Exploring new forage strategies could offer long-term benefits during dry cycles.

In counties that received drought assistance through the Farm Service Agency or soil and water conservation districts, funds may still be available. These can be used to enhance forage stands, invest in grazing tools, or improve water access in pastures.

As weather patterns continue to challenge normal practices, flexible and informed decisions will be essential. Thoughtful planning today can protect pasture productivity and livestock health through the growing season and beyond.
