South Bend Farmer Honored as Master Farmer for Mint Success

By Andi Anderson

The prestigious Master Farmer award has been presented to a South Bend farmer for his exceptional leadership and success in agriculture, particularly in mint production. This recognition highlights his accomplishments and dedication to the industry, a testament to his hard work and vision.

This year marks the 58th Master Farmer class in Indiana, with a select group of farmers being honored for their influence on agriculture. "This award highlights farmers who go the extra mile," said Allison Lynch, Senior Editor at Indiana Prairie Farmer.

Matthys, a fourth-generation farmer, manages nearly 6,000 acres of crops, including corn, wheat, and, notably, both spearmint and peppermint. His dedication to mint production has made him a recognized voice in the state.

Through his involvement with the Midwest Mint Growers and the Mint Industry Research Council, Matthys has become an advocate for Indiana's mint industry.

In his acceptance speech, Matthys expressed deep gratitude for his family, whose unwavering support has been integral to his success. “They’ve always encouraged me to keep going, no matter the challenges,” he said. “Their help has been key in creating the opportunities that have come my way.”

Matthys credits much of his success to the strong support system around him, and he encourages others to embrace opportunities for growth in the agricultural industry. "Take the chance to grow and seize opportunities—it can make all the difference," he shared.
