South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden has activated the state Drought Task Force to closely monitor drought conditions across the state.
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows moderate to extreme drought conditions affecting the lower third of South Dakota. Central parts of the state remain abnormally dry, while northern counties currently continue under normal conditions. State officials said recent rainfall has provided some improvement, but drought concerns still remain in several areas.
“My administration is committed to protecting our farmers, ranchers, and communities across the state. While recent rainfall has provided some relief, drought is still impacting parts of South Dakota,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “The Drought Task Force will help us closely monitor conditions and respond quickly if needed.”
The Drought Task Force brings together state agencies and partner organizations to share drought-related information and evaluate potential impacts. Officials said the group will focus on agriculture, fire management, water supplies, and emergency preparedness while helping coordinate available drought response resources.
Several state agencies are involved in the task force, including the Governor’s Office, Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Department of Public Safety, Department of Tourism, Department of Tribal Relations, South Dakota National Guard, and the Department of Social Services.
Additional partners include the USDA Farm Service Agency, Natural Resource Conservation Service, South Dakota State University Extension, climatologists from the School of Mines, the National Weather Service, and South Dakota Rural Water. These organizations will work together to monitor conditions and provide updated information to communities and agricultural producers.
Because of ongoing dry conditions, officials are encouraging residents to use caution with outdoor burning and activities that could start fires. State leaders said continued monitoring and cooperation between agencies will help South Dakota respond quickly if drought conditions worsen in the coming months.
