South Dakota sheep industry honours top producers

South Dakota sheep industry honours top producers

By Scout Nelson

The 2024 South Dakota Sheep Growers annual convention celebrated excellence in sheep production by naming four operations as South Dakota Master Lamb Producers. The awards were presented by Jaelyn Whaley, SDSU Extension Sheep Field Specialist, recognizing operations that demonstrate outstanding management practices and contribute to the growth of the sheep industry.

The honored operations were Hoffman Corriedales of Rockham, Flying O Sheep of Newell, Lemmel Ranch of Mud Butte, and Max Matthews of Bison. These operations were celebrated for their exceptional contributions to sheep production, including superior wool, sustainability, and operational success.

Hoffman Corriedales continues a legacy as the largest purebred Corriedale producer in the U.S., while Flying O Sheep focuses on Rambouillet ewes, excelling in both fleece quality and sustainability. Lemmel Ranch has a long history of producing high-quality feeder lambs and wool, and Max Matthews is a leader in the American sheep industry, known for adapting and improving his Targhee/Rambouillet ewes.

The 2024 program was sponsored by several organizations, including Big Gain, Hubbard Feeds, and the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association. Recipients were recognized at the convention in Rapid City, which took place on September 27-28, 2024.

This recognition celebrates the ongoing dedication of South Dakota sheep producers and their commitment to the future of the sheep industry.
