South Dakota state fair launches The SHED

South Dakota state fair launches The SHED

By Scout Nelson

On August 29, 2024, The SHED will break ground, marking a momentous occasion for the South Dakota State Fair. This event, which will usher in a new era for the fairgrounds and the surrounding agricultural community, will take place close to the 4-H Beef Exhibits Building.

The SHED has been hailed by Governor Kristi Noem as an example of South Dakota's vision and spirit of cooperation. Resources from the state, local communities, and stakeholders across South Dakota supported the initiative, highlighting its significance for the state's agricultural future.

The SHED is intended to serve as a pillar of the State Fair, fostering its expansion and offering additional avenues for youth to interact with agriculture.

The facility will be the new home for Open Class Sheep during the State Fair and a versatile venue for various livestock and equine events throughout the year. Covering an acre with its expansive rooftop, The SHED will feature a show arena, accommodation for up to 1,000 sheep, an educational center, spectator bleachers, durable concrete flooring, and modern restrooms.

The educational center within The SHED will offer interactive experiences focused on the sheep industry and broader agricultural opportunities, highlighting South Dakota’s rich agricultural heritage. This initiative aims to nurture the next generation of agricultural leaders by providing a space where they can learn, grow, and develop their skills.

The SHED is poised to become a hub for agricultural education and community engagement, enriching the experiences of attendees and participants for many years to come.
