Southeastern Ohio Hay Day Offers Help After Tough Season

Southeastern Ohio Hay Day Offers Help After Tough Season

By Andi Anderson

Hay producers across the region have faced tough conditions from June 2024 to June 2025, with weather swinging between drought and heavy rain. These challenges made it difficult to produce high-quality hay.

While weather cannot be controlled, producers can still improve outcomes by managing land, equipment, and time effectively.

Important strategies include maintaining soil fertility through regular testing and proper nutrient applications. Choosing forage varieties with improved genetics and keeping fields clear of weeds also support better yields.

Keeping equipment well-maintained and ordering key spare parts in advance helps avoid costly downtime during short harvest windows.

Additional steps include preparing covered hay storage or partnering with buyers who can pick up bales from the field. Farmers are encouraged to plan for flexible schedules and line up on-call help ahead of time.

Building strong relationships with neighbors can also provide critical support during busy seasons.

To help producers prepare for future success, OSU Extension is hosting Southeastern Ohio Hay Day on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 16870 Bond Ridge Road, Caldwell, OH. The event begins at 9:00 a.m. and wraps up by 4:00 p.m.

Attendees will enjoy equipment displays, live demonstrations, and educational talks led by OSU Extension experts. The event is free and open to all. Light refreshments, lunch, and beverages will be provided.

Sponsorship for the event includes various OSU Extension offices, local equipment dealers, and agricultural organizations.

To RSVP, visit https://go.osu.edu/haydayrsvp or call 740-732-5681. For details, a flyer, or event updates, visit https://go.osu.edu/seohhayday. RSVPs by July 15 are encouraged, especially for accessibility or dietary needs. Walk-ins are also welcome.
