To celebrate National Soy Foods Month, the North Dakota Department of Agriculture is hosting a cooking demonstration and greenhouse tour at United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) in Bismarck. This event takes place on Tuesday, April 15, and showcases the value of soybeans and sustainable agriculture.
Students from UTTC’s sustainable agriculture and food systems program will lead the cooking demonstration, starting at 3 p.m. at the campus located at 3315 University Drive. The students will prepare a recipe using edamame, which are green, immature soybeans often enjoyed as a healthy snack or side dish.
“April is National Soy Foods Month, and students will add their own unique culinary flare to a soy foods recipe utilizing edamame,” said Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. “Attendees will learn about soybeans and other North Dakota specialty crops, and their importance in agriculture in North Dakota.”
Before the cooking session, a greenhouse tour will begin at 2 p.m. The tour will give the public a chance to see UTTC’s new greenhouse and learn about sustainable growing methods and new crop technologies. For those unable to attend in person, the tour will be streamed online.
The event is open to the public, and registration is required for both the tour and the cooking demo. People can sign up online at https://forms.gle/r7X86cmfJKfdJWaA6.
Anyone with questions about the event can contact the North Dakota Department of Agriculture’s Local Foods Marketing Specialist at 701-328-2659 or by email.
This event highlights the role of soy in the local food system and aims to inspire students and the community to learn more about healthy foods and farming practices that support the environment.
