The North Central Region – Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR-SARE) program, supported by the USDA, has opened four competitive grant programs for individuals and organizations working to advance sustainable agriculture across the Midwest.
Since 1988, NCR-SARE has funded projects that encourage innovation, economic growth, and environmental stewardship. These grants aim to strengthen the sustainability of the region’s farms and communities by supporting ideas that improve productivity while protecting natural resources.
Here are the four open grant opportunities:
- Research and Education Grant Program – For researchers and educators. Preproposals are due December 4, 2025, by 4 p.m. Central.
- Partnership Grant Program – For collaboration between agriculture professionals and small farmer groups. Applications are due November 20, 2025, by 4 p.m. Central.
- Professional Development Program – For agricultural educators in extension, NRCS, and nonprofit organizations. Proposals are due November 5, 2025, by 4 p.m. Central.
- Farmer Rancher Grant Program – For farmers and ranchers exploring new practices. Proposals are due December 4, 2025, by 4 p.m. Central.
In addition, the Youth Educator Grant Program will open for proposals in January 2026.
To assist applicants, NCR-SARE offers a Grant How-To Video Series, which provides step-by-step guidance on how to apply successfully. Each state also has a Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator available to help applicants with the process.
