Transform your pasture at Iowa's grazing clinic

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Beef Center, together with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, is set to host a fencing and grazing clinic in Castana, western Iowa. Scheduled for June 26, the event will unfold at the Western Research and Demonstration Farm, offering a full day of educational sessions designed to optimize farm operations.

Beth Reynolds, a program specialist with the beef center, explains the clinic's objective: "This clinic is designed to help improve the infrastructure on your farm to execute an efficient grazing plan." The day will cover various aspects crucial for an efficient grazing setup, including fencing, paddock building, and strategies for weather resilience.

The clinic, timely following the busy calving season and spring planting, focuses on crucial summer preparations for beef producers.

Erika Lundy-Woolfolk, an extension beef specialist, highlighted the clinic’s interactive format, combining hands-on activities with classroom learning and peer discussions.

"Participants can expect a mix of hands-on, classroom style and peer learning methods to keep the day interactive and informational," she said.

Session topics include innovative fencing tools presented by Brad Ketchum from Gallagher Animal Management, paddock building by Pat Corey of USDA-Crawford County, and weather outlooks by Madelynn Wuestenberg, an agricultural climatology specialist.

Planning for weather resilience will be discussed by Shelby Gruss, a forage specialist, and the day will conclude with a farm tour led by Lundy-Woolfolk and Reynolds.

Located at 36515 Highway E34 in Castana, the clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., including a noon lunch provided at no cost.

Preregistration is essential and must be completed by June 24 with no fee. Interested participants can register by calling 515-294-2333 or emailing beefcenter@iastate.edu with their name, email, and phone number.
