The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration have issued a safety advisory to owners of anhydrous ammonia nurse tanks.
This alert concerns tanks produced by the American Welding and Tank (AWT) Company in Fremont, Ohio, from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2011. These tanks have shown integrity issues with the welding that may lead to catastrophic ruptures.
Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has strongly encouraged nurse tank owners to check their tanks. "Nurse tank owners are urged to check the nameplates on their tanks to see if their tank was manufactured by AWT between 2007 and 2011," he stated.
Owners of affected tanks should ensure they are inspected and cleared before use to prevent accidents. For those needing tank testing, a list of service providers is available at www.ndda.nd.gov/nursetanks.
