US invests $200M in battle against bird flu on farms

By Jamie Martin

In response to escalating concerns over bird flu, the U.S. government announced a substantial $200 million initiative aimed at bolstering defenses against the virus, particularly within the dairy sector. The funding is split equally between enhancing biosecurity on dairy farms and ramping up public health efforts to track and contain the virus.

The Agriculture Department is dedicating $100 million to assist dairy farms affected by bird flu. Farms are eligible for up to $28,000 over the next four months to improve biosecurity protocols and prevent the virus's spread. This includes compensation for veterinary expenses and the cost of implementing stringent safety measures such as heat treatments for milk disposal.

On the public health front, the Department of Health and Human Services is investing an additional $100 million. This investment will expand efforts in contact tracing, wastewater surveillance, and vaccine research, aiming to mitigate the risk of the virus affecting humans.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized the goal of equipping producers with the latest scientific guidance and resources. According to the USDA, nine states have reported bird flu detections across 42 dairy herds. The federal response also involves collaborating with states on movement restrictions for cattle and compensating for milk production losses due to the virus.

Despite these measures, officials assure that the safety of commercial milk and beef remains uncompromised, with affected cows generally recovering and minimal fatalities reported. However, calls continue for a more unified government approach to prevent any potential virus mutation and cross-species transmission.
