US tackles deforestation with bold new policy framework

US tackles deforestation with bold new policy framework

By Jamie Martin

The Administration has unveiled a policy framework aimed at reducing the importation of commodities linked to illegal deforestation. This framework, developed through Executive Order 14072, focuses on sustainable agriculture and supply chain transparency. It aligns with the global goal of halting and reversing deforestation by 2030.

Key aspects of the framework include reducing illegal deforestation driven by commodity production and leveraging advanced technology like Earth observation data to monitor and enforce policies. Businesses at high risk of deforestation will be prioritized, ensuring compliance without unnecessary costs for low-risk areas.

The framework also emphasizes collaboration with governments and private sectors to enhance sustainable land management practices. “The United States seeks to develop an effective and informed policy that would minimize unnecessary compliance costs," the policy states.

Efforts extend to strengthening private sector investments in traceability systems and engaging in international cooperation to combat deforestation. For more details, visit Deforestation | USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.
