USDA and HHS announce $199 million package to address H5N1 in dairy cattle

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a combined $199 million package to address the recent detection of H5N1 in dairy cattle. This initiative aims to control the spread of the virus, ensure the safety of the milk supply, and protect public health.

USDA Actions:

• Financial Assistance -Up to $28,000 per affected farm to improve biosecurity measures, offset milk production losses, and cover veterinary costs.
• Enhanced Biosecurity -Support for biosecurity planning, in-line milk samplers, and heat treatment for milk disposal.
• Movement Restrictions -Collaboration with states to limit the movement of lactating dairy cattle.

HHS Actions:

• CDC Funding -$93 million to strengthen testing, surveillance, genomic sequencing, and wastewater monitoring for H5N1.
• Public Health Measures -Updated guidance for workers, support for field investigations, and PPE distribution.
• FDA Funding -$8 million to validate pasteurization methods, conduct milk supply surveillance, and train staff on biosecurity.

This joint effort demonstrates the government's commitment to a comprehensive response to H5N1. By supporting producers, enhancing biosecurity, and bolstering public health measures, USDA and HHS aim to mitigate the impact of this virus and safeguard the food supply.
